Trianel wind farm Borkum starts supplying electricity

Municipal North Sea wind farm goes online

Aachen, Borkum. Europe's first 100% municipal offshore wind farm is now supplying electricity. The first plant was connected yesterday. "As the permanent connection was successfully established with the mainland through the TenneT transformer platform 'DolWin alpha' on 23 December 2014, the first plant is now in test operation," says Klaus Horstick, Managing Director of Trianel Windkraftwerk Borkum GmbH & Co. KG. The offshore wind farm, which consists of 40 wind turbines, is located approximately 45 kilometres off the coast of the island of Borkum in the North Sea. Construction of the wind farm was completed in mid 2014. Owing to repeated delays in connecting to the power grid by the transmission system operator, connection to the grid was pushed back to the start of the year.

The 40 wind turbines will now be connected in collaboration with the manufacturer Areva Wind. By spring, all AREVA Wind M5000 turbines with a 5 MW output are due to have been progressively connected. "We hope that the weather will cooperate and allow us to complete the connection soon, in order that we can initiate regular operations after a successful test operation in summer," says Horstick.

The Norwegian multi-purpose vessel AKER WAYFARER was chartered to connect the various turbines. The 157-metre long ship is equipped with two heavy-duty cranes and has up to ten technicians on board in addition to the crew.

The technical management of the Trianel wind farm Borkum will be based on the mainland. The wind farm and transformer stations will be monitored and controlled from the management office in Emden.
Based on its expected 4000 full load hours, the Trianel wind farm Borkum will generate roughly 800 gigawatt hours of electricity (800 million kWh) per year. This is enough electricity to supply 200,000 households. 33 municipal utilities and regional suppliers from Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland, as well as the Aachen-based network of municipal utilities Trianel, are involved in the offshore wind farm.
